VAM USA Vehicle Monitoring Positively Affects Driver Behavior

Houston, Texas - April 9, 2014

As part of an overall driver risk management program to reduce unsafe driving, VAM USA started a company vehicle monitoring program. The goal is to make VAM USA, not only the safest place to work at, but also a company where vehicles are operated in the safest manner possible.

VAM USA operates a fleet of 114 vehicles that log over 150,000 miles per month. Since December 2014 the entire fleet is outfitted with a monitoring device that tracks GPS location, speed, harsh braking, harsh cornering, harsh acceleration and seatbelt usage.

Currently, a report is prepared weekly that assesses the drivers on their driving behavior. This report is sent to each of their managers. This information is used as the basis for discussing driving behavior, recognizing both positive achievements and opportunities to improve. The results have been dramatic: there has been a 78% reduction in unsafe behavior and an over 80% reduction in speeding violations.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and OSHA, about 40% of work related deaths in the USA are motor vehicle related, and about 30% of all vehicle fatalities are speeding related.
